Type 2 diabetes is a disease characterized by high blood sugar levels (hyperglycemia) and occurs when the body is resistant to insulin or does not produce enough. Type 2 diabetes accounts for more than nine out of ten diagnosed cases of diabetes in the US, according to the CDC.
Symptoms of type 2 diabetes may include hunger, thirst, fatigue, increased urination and a tingling sensation in the hands and feet. Obesity is one of the primary causes of type 2 diabetes. Other causal factors include poor eating habits, prediabetes, lack of exercise, and polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS). Left untreated, type 2 diabetes can lead to a number of other complications and conditions, such as heart disease, diabetic nephropathy, diabetic neuropathy and ulcers.
Lifestyle changes, such as getting more exercise and eating a healthier diet, are usually recommended to patients with type 2 diabetes. Medication is also prescribed. Drugs used to treat the type 2 diabetes include biguanides, such as metformin, and insulins. Other mediation may include sulfonylureas, gliptins, statins and amyln analogues.
